Land of the Living

Still alive and mostly over the nastiest cold I've had in ages!! The fun thing is that I'm going out via float-plane to a field camp today and I was supposed to spend last week preparing, ha ha. I could barely get off the couch to refill my water bottle let alone sort and pack all the gear and equipment. AND I didn't have a chance to get a license and pike tackle.

So I'm off to collect white blood cells from wild ducks. They need to be processed quickly in a sterile environment so we figured we would forgo sterility for speediness. It's supposed to be a pretty cushy field camp, but they still don't have a biological containment hood. My other issue is that I cannot get blood out of a duck and they flap and kick and bite (can you blame them?)

My prediction is that if H5N1 does actually make it over here from Europe/Asia and jump from bird to human, it'll be a biologist that starts the whole global pandemic =). Ah well, it will be a nice change from the lab, a wee adventure to make me feel like a "real" biologist. Wish me luck!
